COCONUT SUYA RED RICE

Coconut Suya Red Rice: Where African Flavor Meets Global Fusion
Afro-Fusion is more than combining ingredients—it is a celebration of cultures, creativity, and the freedom to create something delicious.
This Coconut Suya Red Rice is a perfect example of how African flavors can meet global culinary influences to create something completely new.
Earthy red rice is paired with creamy coconut curry sauce, colorful vegetables, aromatic herbs, ginger, garlic, and tender chicken or beef. Then comes the unmistakable smoky warmth of suya-inspired flavor.
The result? A vibrant, comforting bowl of rice that feels familiar yet wonderfully different.
What Is Afro-Fusion?
Afro-Fusion is the art of bringing the flavors, ingredients, techniques, and traditions of African cuisine together with influences from other culinary cultures.
It doesn’t mean losing the identity of African food.
Instead, it creates room for African flavors to travel, evolve, and inspire.
Think of the boldness of suya seasoning meeting coconut curry. Think of traditional African pepper blends working alongside global sauces and herbs. Think of familiar rice transformed into something that can be enjoyed by people from different cultures and food backgrounds.
That is the beauty of Afro-Fusion.

🌍

The Inspiration Behind This Dish
Rice is enjoyed across Africa in countless ways, from jollof rice to fried rice, coconut rice, seasoned rice dishes, and regional specialties.
For this recipe, we wanted to take that love of rice and give it an Afro-Fusion twist.
Instead of making a traditional rice dish, we start with red rice, which has a beautiful earthy character and hearty texture.
We then layer in:
•

🌿

Green herb paste for freshness
•

🌰

Fennel seeds for an aromatic note
•

🥥

Coconut curry sauce for creaminess
•

🌶️

Pepper mix for gentle heat
•

🔥

Suya butter for smoky African-inspired flavor
•

🧄

Garlic and ginger for depth
•

🥕

Colorful vegetables for texture and brightness
•

🍗

Chicken or beef for protein
Each ingredient brings something different to the bowl.
Together, they create a dish that is unmistakably Afro-Fusion.

🥥

Why Coconut and Suya Work So Well Together
Coconut and suya might not be the first combination that comes to mind, but that’s exactly what makes Afro-Fusion exciting.
The creamy, slightly sweet character of coconut curry creates a beautiful contrast with the bold, smoky, peppery notes associated with suya.
The coconut softens and balances the spice, while the suya flavor gives the creamy sauce personality.
It’s a meeting of flavors that shouldn’t necessarily work on paper—but absolutely comes alive in the pot.

🌈

A Bowl Full of Color
Afro-Fusion isn’t only about flavor. Presentation matters too.
The red rice creates a beautiful foundation, while carrots, red bell peppers, and cabbage add vibrant colors.
The vegetables also provide different textures, keeping the dish from becoming one-dimensional.
For an extra flourish, finish the dish with fresh herbs and a light sprinkle of suya seasoning.
Because we eat with our eyes first!

🍚

How to Make Coconut Suya Red Rice
Ingredients
For the Red Rice:
• 1 cup red rice
• 3 cups water
• 1 tbsp fennel seeds
• 1 tsp salt
• 1 small onion, chopped
• 1 tbsp green herb paste
For the Afro-Fusion Sauce:
• 1 cup coconut curry sauce
• 1 cup chopped cooked chicken or beef
• 1 cup chopped colored carrots
• 1 cup chopped red bell pepper
• 1 cup chopped cabbage
• 2 tsp garlic
• 2 tsp ginger-miso-honey dressing
• 1 tbsp pepper mix
• 2 tsp Moji All-Purpose Seasoning or seasoning of choice
• 1 tbsp coconut butter
• 1 tbsp suya butter
• 1 tsp salt, optional
Method
1. Cook the red rice.
Rinse the red rice and add it to a pot with the water, fennel seeds, salt, chopped onion, and green herb paste.
Bring to a boil, reduce the heat, cover, and cook until the rice is tender. Fluff with a fork and set aside.
2. Create your flavor base.
Heat the coconut butter and suya butter in a large skillet or pot. Add the garlic, ginger-miso-honey dressing, and pepper mix. Sauté until fragrant.
3. Add the vegetables.
Add the carrots, red bell pepper, and cabbage. Stir-fry for several minutes, allowing the vegetables to maintain some of their color and texture.
4. Add the protein.
Stir in your cooked chicken or beef.
5. Bring in the coconut curry.
Pour in the coconut curry sauce and add the Moji All-Purpose Seasoning. Stir well and allow the mixture to simmer for a few minutes.
6. Add the red rice.
Fold the cooked red rice into the sauce. Mix gently until the rice is evenly coated and all the ingredients are beautifully combined.
Taste and add additional salt only if necessary.

✨

Make It Your Own
That’s another beautiful part of Afro-Fusion: there are no limits to creativity.
You can change the protein, add more vegetables, adjust the heat, or experiment with different herbs and seasonings.
Try it with:

🍗

Chicken

🥩

Beef

🦐

Shrimp

🌱

Chickpeas or another plant-based protein
You can also make it your own by adjusting the coconut curry sauce or adding more suya flavor depending on your taste.

SUYA GARLIC GARLIC BUTTER FRIED RICE

Suya Garlic Butter Fried Rice: Where African Flavor Meets Modern Fusion
Food has a beautiful way of telling stories.
Sometimes that story begins with a traditional African flavor and continues in a completely new direction.
Suya Garlic Butter Fried Rice is one of those stories.
At Flourish Spices & African Food, we believe African food can be both deeply rooted in tradition and boldly creative. Afro-fusion lets us take flavors we already love and pair them with new ingredients, techniques, and presentations.
This fried rice is a perfect example.
The African Soul: Suya
Suya seasoning is a defining flavor in this recipe.
Known for its warm, smoky, spicy character, suya flavor brings an unmistakable African identity to the rice.
Instead of using suya simply as a coating for meat, we are allowing the seasoning to become part of the rice itself.
Every grain gets a little taste of that smoky, savory goodness.
Why Garlic Butter?
Garlic butter adds another layer of richness.
The combination of garlic and butter creates a luxurious base for the onions, green herb paste, pepper mix, and vegetables.
It also helps carry the other flavors throughout the rice.
The result is a fried rice that tastes rich without losing the freshness of the vegetables.
A Modern Twist
Then comes the unexpected combination of ginger-miso-honey dressing.
The ginger brings warmth.
The honey adds a gentle sweetness.
The miso contributes savory depth.
Together, they complement the smoky suya seasoning and create a more complex flavor profile.
This is where the Afro-fusion concept really comes alive.
African flavors don’t have to stay in one category.
They can travel.
They can meet other culinary traditions.
And they can become something new.
Color Is Part of the Experience
Colored carrots, red bell peppers, and spring onions don’t just add nutrition and texture—they make the dish visually exciting.
And then comes the Flourish finishing touch: edible flowers.
The flowers transform an everyday fried rice into something that feels special enough for entertaining, celebrations, or a beautiful family dinner.
Because we believe food should nourish the body and create an experience.
More Than a Recipe
Suya Garlic Butter Fried Rice represents what we love about Afro-fusion:
Tradition + creativity + flavor + presentation.
It takes familiar African seasoning and gives it a fresh expression.
At Flourish Spices & African Food, our goal is to make African flavors approachable, exciting, and versatile—whether you’re cooking a traditional dish or experimenting with something completely new.
So the next time you’re making fried rice, don’t be afraid to think differently.
Add a little African flavor.
Add your own personality.
And most importantly…
Let your food Flourish.
